Living by the moon: a monthly self-care rhythm

Four phases, four small rituals, and a warm, floral balm to carry you through the month.

Long before calendars and phone reminders, people kept time by the moon. Every 29 and a half days it grows from a thin silver curve to a full, bright circle and back to darkness again. Farmers planted by it, sailors read the tides by it, and herbalists have long gathered and prepared their plants by it.

The moon’s cycle is close in length to many women’s monthly cycles, and that’s no accident in the language we use: the words “month” and “moon” share the same ancient root. You don’t have to follow astrology to find meaning in that. The moon is simply a beautiful, built-in reminder to slow down, check in with yourself and make room for care, every single month.

A rhythm in four phases

Think of the lunar month as four gentle seasons. Each one invites a slightly different kind of self-care. Look up tonight to see where you are, or check any moon calendar.

New moonRest and resetThe sky is dark and quiet, and it’s a natural time to turn inward. Clear your calendar for one evening, go to bed a little early and write down one intention for the month ahead. Keep it small and kind, like “drink more water” or “walk after dinner.”
Waxing moonBuild and nourishAs the moon grows, so does your energy. This is the time for fresh starts: cook a nourishing meal, stretch in the morning, tackle the project you’ve been putting off. Nourish your body the way you would tend a garden that’s just starting to grow.
Full moonCelebrate and connectThe moon is at its brightest. Step outside and enjoy it. Share a meal with friends, take a moonlit walk, or simply sit by the window and notice how far you’ve come since the new moon. Gratitude comes easily under a full moon.
Waning moonRelease and softenAs the light fades, let things go. Tidy a drawer, say no to one extra commitment, and make space for softness. This is the season for warm baths, cozy socks, heating up a cup of tea and slowing your whole routine down.

Where Wise Woman Comfort Balm fits in

We formulated Wise Woman Comfort Balm for exactly this kind of monthly self-care ritual. It’s a warm, floral balm that turns a few quiet minutes into something you look forward to, whatever phase the moon is in.

Our herbalist infuses organic arnica, chamomile, rose, St. John’s wort and hops in organic jojoba oil for more than 30 days, then blends the oil with cocoa butter, mango butter and beeswax. A finish of clary sage, lavender, rose and cardamom essential oils gives it a soft, comforting scent that’s floral, a little spicy and deeply calming to breathe in. On the skin it melts into a silky layer that leaves you feeling soft, cared for and grounded.

A simple waning-moon ritual

The waning moon, when you’re ready to release and soften, is our favorite time to reach for Comfort Balm. Here’s a ten-minute ritual to try:

  1. Set the scene. Dim the lights, light a candle and brew a cup of herbal tea. Chamomile or rose pairs beautifully with the balm’s scent.
  2. Warm the balm. Scoop a fingertip of Comfort Balm and rub it between your palms until it softens. Cup your hands over your nose and take three slow, deep breaths.
  3. Massage slowly. Smooth the balm over your lower belly, lower back or hips in wide, slow circles. Let the warmth of your hands do the work, and move at the pace of your breath.
  4. Rest. Curl up under a blanket or with a warm water bottle for a few minutes. Notice how your body feels, without trying to fix anything.
  5. Reflect. Before bed, jot down one thing you’re ready to let go of this month. Then close the jar and close the day.

Good to know

Comfort Balm is for external use only. Avoid broken skin and your eyes, and try a small amount first if your skin is sensitive. If you are pregnant, nursing or under a doctor’s care, check with your healthcare provider before use.

Keep it close

Keep a jar of Comfort Balm on your nightstand for your monthly ritual, and tuck a tin in your bag for comfort wherever the month takes you.
